VP Pence demands United Nations recognize Juan Guaido as Venezuela's president

United States Vice President Mike Pence, second from left top, looks at Venezuela United Nations Ambassador Samuel Moncada, bottom right, while addressing him directly during a meeting on Venezuela in the U.N. Security Council, April 10, 2019 at U.N. headquarters.

All bank accounts belonging to Venezuela's diplomatic organisations based in the U.S. have been frozen by Washington, Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations Samuel Moncada said on Wednesday.

But it is unlikely Washington will get the support needed to carry out something so huge in either the Security Council or the General Assembly.

While speaking to the UN Security Council Wednesday, Pence said Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro must go. Russian Federation and Iran have no business in Venezuela.

The vice president also announced that the administration was pledging to dispatch $61 million in additional humanitarian aid to the more than 3 million Venezuelans who have fled the crisis-stricken country in recent years because of widespread food and medicine shortages.

"The United States is preparing a resolution recognising the legitimacy of the government of interim president Juan Guaido, and today we urge every member of the Security Council and all UN member states to support this resolution", he said. He said also it's time for the U.N.to seat Guaido's representative at the United Nations - and expel the current representative. "They should step aside and allow the people of Venezuela to restore their democracy and their freedom".

"If you want to make America great again, and we're all sincerely interested in seeing that, stop interfering in the affairs of other states", Nebenzia told U.S. officials.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Thursday it has reached agreement with the Venezuelan government of Nicolas Maduro to expand aid operations, supporting hospitals and health centers in providing vital medical care.

Following Pence's speech, Russia's United Nations envoy Vassily Nebenzia said that the U.S. had "artificially provoked a crisis" in Venezuela in order to overthrow "a legitimately elected leader and replace him with their own pawn".

At least 3.4 million Venezuelans have left the country over its humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations predicting this will rise to about five million by the end of the year. He urged the U.N.to make a distinction between the political and humanitarian questions, and amp up efforts to provide humanitarian relief.
