Nowitzki announces retirement after 21 seasons with Mavericks

The 40-year-old German had left the door open to extending his career for another season, but finally confirmed his retirement after the Mavericks' 120-109 win over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

After speeches from Larry Bird and others he idolized growing up in Germany, Nowitzki told the crowd, "As you guys might expect, this is my last home game".

He finishes with 14 All-Star Game appearances, averaging about 20 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game for his career.

That shot had a practical objective as well, pushing the Dallas lead back to 12 after the Mavericks let a 30-point halftime cushion dwindle to four in the fourth quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki, one of the greatest global players to ever step on an National Basketball Association hardwood floor, announced Tuesday night he would be retiring at the end of the season. His final game will be against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

Nowitzki came to play, scoring 30 points (11-31 FG) in his 32 minutes on the court. Barkley added, "It's been an honor and a privilege to watch you - enjoy the rest of your life". It's the longest drought of Nowitzki's career.

A sellout crowd followed owner Mark Cuban's order of filling the arena early, and cheered from the first possible moment for the player who guided the Mavericks to their only championship eight years ago. He was the first player that big to be a legitimate threat at the 3-point line. Then he had another dunk in the game - his second of the season - in the second half. It's expected that Nowitzki will pass on joining former teammate Vince Carter, who has said he plans to return for a record 22nd season. "It just doesn't make any sense any more physically. But physically, the foot is just not quite there".
