Fresh Signs Trump Might Not Accept Defeat in 2020

President Trump backed off plans to introduce a Republican replacement for the Affordable Care Act after Senator Mitch McConnell privately warned him that the Senate would not revisit health care in a comprehensive way before the November 2020 elections. The president stunned Republicans last week by announcing he wanted to try again to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, insisting the GOP could become the "party of health care".

"The Republicans are developing a really great HealthCare plan with far lower premiums (cost) & deductibles than ObamaCare".

"In other words it will be far less expensive & much more usable than ObamaCare", he said.

President Donald Trump - who has previously issued baseless claims about ballot-counting and voter fraud - warned House Republicans on Tuesday night to be "more paranoid" about vote tallies.

In the video above Trump declares, "The Republican Party will soon be known as the 'Party of Healthcare'". "If we get back the House and on the assumption we keep the Senate and we keep the presidency - which I hope are two good assumptions - we're going to have a phenomenal healthcare", Trump told reporters.

Given the polling data, Altman and Brodie say that Trump's strategy of focusing on health care as the 2020 election heats up probably won't work, even as "it hands the Democrats a huge political opportunity".

Bottom line: Trump doesn't know the first thing about health care, the courts, the law, how the government works, or the Constitution. He didn't want to cede the issue again in the 2020 campaign, according to a person familiar with the conversations who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is expected to use the nuclear option to bypass democrat obstruction of the president's nominees. The GOP's move Wednesday restored a precedent that had been in place during the first few years of President Barack Obama's second term, and limited that debate time to just two hours. "We have to take that away from them".

The House's non-binding resolution would also ask the Department of Justice to reverse its decision and protect the law, including provisions regarding coverage for pre-existing conditions.

"The best-laid plans and best of intentions with regard to an overhaul of the health care system in this country run into the wall of reality that it's going to be very hard to get a Democrat House and a Republican Senate to agree on something".

Republicans said at the time that Reid and Democrats would come to regret that rules change, which has given Trump largely free rein to fill numerous judicial vacancies that have piled up over the years. H. Res 271 opposes actions taken by the Trump Administration to remove protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions, cancel co-pay and deductible caps, and halt assistance programs for seniors struggling with sky-high drug prices.

"I think you could have a long, drawn-out crisis in which our institutions lose credibility", Levitsky said.

Senator John Thune, R, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said it makes sense to wait until after the election to attempt the large-scale health insurance overhaul the President was suggesting.
