Rebuke or CYA? Pelosi takes aim at Omar -- in speech to AIPAC

Omar's anti-semitic comments in February received bipartisan condemnation and the congresswoman subsequently apologized for her comments.

"From @jstreetdotorg to @ifnotnow, @PeaceNowUS @moveon and more-there are so many who have spoken out on this issue", Omar said in one of her tweets. The reason that the people of America support Israel is not because they want our money, it's because they share our values.

USA congresswoman Ilhan Omar criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, saying the focus of his speech at this year's American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference in Washington, D.C. was on her.

Omar, a vocal supporter of sanctions against Israel, responded later in the day by telling reporters on Capitol Hill that the BDS movement was an exercise of free speech.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who spoke after Netanyahu, remarked that the anti-Semitism that had been on the political fringes has alarmingly become mainstream.

"So when someone accuses American supporters of Israel of dual loyalty, I say: Accuse me", Hoyer said Sunday.

Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Tuesday for her recent comments about the motivation of American allies of Israel, arguing that her remarks do more than just attack Israel - they target the Jewish people.

He did not mention Omar by name. Pelosi has decided not to advance the bill in the House and will put forward a nonbinding resolution condemning BDS instead. Netanyahu, who faces reelection on April 9, had cut short a visit to Washington, returning to Israel after meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.

"We don't judge people by the color of their skin, their religion, or their sexual orientation", he added.

I believe that the establishment of the state of Israel was the greatest political accomplishment of the Twentieth Century.

Trump and other Republicans recently have seized on the failure of House Democrats to pass a resolution specifically condemning anti-Semitism due to blowback from Omar and others in their caucus.

"We must also be vigilant against bigoted or unsafe ideologies masquerading as policy, and that includes BDS", she argued.

"Whenever we see anything shifting, I think it's very, very important that Democrats and Republicans, stand up and make it very clear that we will not allow partisanship, from either side, into the relationship", said Gottheimer, D-5th Dist.

Pelosi also said, to loud applause, "We should honor legitimate debate without questioning loyalty or patriotism".

Support for Israel has proven to be a sensitive subject in US politics, with politicians on both sides equating overt criticism of the world's only majority-Jewish state to veiled anti-Semitism.
