Australian Man Appears In Court On Murder Charge After Christchurch Attack

A fourth person was arrested yesterday in the wake of the shootings, but has been released without charge.

Tarrant was then seen making an OK gesture - a symbol which has been used by white supremacists.

This still image taken from video circulated on social media, apparently taken by the suspected shooter and posted online live as the attack unfolded, shows him entering a mosque in Christchurch. Reuters was unable to confirm the footage's authenticity and police urged people not to view or share it.

Hours after dozens of people were shot dead at two mosques in Christchurch, witnesses described how a young mosque worker risked his life as he tried to apprehend the gunman.

In signs police say show a well-planned attack, army personnel were also called in to dismantle explosive devices found in a stopped auto and officers were on Friday evening searching a house in Dunedin, 360 kilometres away, clearing nearby homes for safety.

Clarke Jones, a terrorism expert at Australia National University, says it was "inevitable" that this sort of attack was to take place.

Two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and lever-action gun were used in the attacks.

"It scares the public", said Alpers, who is based in Sydney, Australia, and moved there from New Zealand.

"The offender was in possession of a gun licence", Ardern said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the shooter, an Australian native, had chosen to strike in New Zealand "because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion".

The audio recording of Ardern's press conference was published by New Zealand Herald. Eleven people remained in intensive care, hospital authorities said.

Funerals were planned on Saturday for some of the victims, several who were born overseas.

Christchurch hospital's chief of surgery, Dr Greg Robertson, said numerous victims would require multiple surgeries.

On Friday afternoon shortly after Friday prayers, Mr Tarrant appeared to have live-streamed the terror attack from inside the Masjid Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch.

The attackers specifically targeted Muslims. We, New Zealand, we were not a target because we are a safe harbour for those who hate.

"There's not many words that I can put to what has happened here because it's so calm and relaxed", he said.

In addition to the dead, she said more than 20 people were seriously wounded.

He also reached out to the Muslim community in Christchurch and in New Zealand.

Political and Islamic leaders across Asia and the Middle East voiced concern over the targeting of Muslims. One of the women told Xinhua "No matter what cultural backgrounds, races or religions you are from, we are absolutely together".

"He had a big gun. he came and started shooting everyone in the mosque, everywhere", said the man, Ahmad Al-Mahmoud. Five other Pakistani citizens were still unaccounted for, he said.

Facebook said, that having been alerted by police, it had deleted the gunman's accounts "shortly after the livestream commenced".

Bush said 41 people were killed at the Al Noor Mosque near Hagley Park in the city's center; seven were killed at a mosque in Linwood, a few miles away.

The wounded included a two-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, who was in critical condition.
