Beto O’Rourke to Announce 2020 Presidential Bid

Beto O'Rourke told local news outlet KTSM Wednesday that he is running for president, and he will formally announce on Thursday.

"CBS This Morning" co-anchor Gayle King will speak with O'Rourke for his only national TV interview following his 2020 announcement, Friday on "CBS This Morning" with a preview airing on "CBS Evening News" Thursday night.

Meanwhile, a source tied to O'Rourke's campaign confirmed to Reuters that the ex-congressman would be running. He has the potential to tap into various constituencies and, as the El Paso rally demonstrated, a willingness to take on the president.

The 46-year-old mounted a stronger-than-expected challenge to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz past year, but his political ideology has been a topic of debate, with some describing him as "far-left" and others framing his campaign as "centrist". He raised about $80 million for his bid, most of it from small-dollar donations, and amassed a nationwide grassroots following while eschewing traditional campaign methods. But with just three terms in the House and losing his only statewide bid for office, it could lead others to question whether O'Rourke has the necessary experience for the nation's highest office.

Is Beto O'Rourke pandering or is his message lost in translation?

"Beto O'Rourke will have to define himself against a crowded field of Democratic candidates, but he doesn't feel the need to draw blood to define himself".

O'Rourke has some stiff competition, with Sen. John Cornyn in 2020, but he made a decision to seek higher office instead.

"I'm not big on labels", O'Rourke told reporters in December when asked whether he could be considered a progressive.

"He has a lot of hand movement. I just truly emerged out of this by being with people".

Numerous candidates have put themselves forward to lead the Democratic push to regain the White House.

"This moment of peril produces, perhaps, the greatest moment of promise for this country", he said in the video which was posted on the El Paso Times website.

The former Texas congressman has joined the growing list of Democrats who hope to take on Donald Trump at the next election.
