Thousands of students to protest against climate change today

"We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change, it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees", Norwegian Socialist MP Freddy Andre Ovstegard told AFP news agency.

"Youth Strike 4 Climate Derry'" is being led by Foyle College student, 17-year-old Jodi Desmond, who has been inspired by the actions of 16-year-old Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg, who has called on students all over the world to strike on Fridays in protest against climate change.

The U.S. climate change walkouts are part of a larger worldwide climate change movement called #FridaysforFuture where tens of thousands of student climate change activists around the world in more than 90 countries are expected to cut class on March 15 to demand that lawmakers in their respective countries take action on climate change and stop global warming.

After the news of her nomination broke, Thunberg took to Twitter to say she was "honoured and very grateful for this nomination".

"Those in power are not only betraying us, and taking away our future, but are responsible for the climate crisis that's unfolding in horrendous ways around the world". "And we will continue to do so for as long as it takes".

Some friends are "not into it at all", she suspects because they do not want to go out in the cold - the forecast is for hail on Friday.

"It's going to be quite impressive", said Gillibrand of the School Strike for Climate movement, "and it's incredibly inspiring that it all started with Greta striking on her own".

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has 304 candidates, of which 219 are individuals and 85 organisations, the Norwegian Nobel Committee reported last month.

"We need to listen to the wisdom of our kids!" she added.

Greta Thunberg, Davos: 'Adults keep saying: 'We owe it to the young people to give them hope.' But I don't want your hope.

They will skip school and demonstrate in an attempt to get their governments to do more to tackle climate change.

After her speeches at the United Nations climate change conference in Poland and at the Davos forum, she became an example for many young people all over the world, who since have promoted similar initiatives.
