Indonesian woman charged in Kim Jong Nam's death freed

Siti Aisyah had been accused alongside Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam of killing Kim Jong Nam by smearing VX nerve agent on his face at Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017, in a brazen Cold War-style hit that shocked the world.

After a little over two years since the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, one of the two women suspected to have murdered the 45-year-old has just had charges dropped against her.

Huong's lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, said Huong felt Aisyah's discharge was unfair to her because the judge past year had found sufficient evidence to continue the murder trial against them.

Two women appeared to spread poison on Kim Jong Nam's face while he was walking through the Kuala Lumpur airport in early 2017.

Aisyah thanked Widodo and his government for helping secure her release.

Indonesia's government said its continual high-level lobbying resulted in Ms Aisyah's release.

While the court discharged Aisyah from the case, it rejected her lawyer's request for her to be fully acquitted, as it said that the trial had already established a prima facie case and she could be recalled if fresh evidence emerges.

A High Court judge last August had found there was enough evidence to infer Aisyah, Huong and the four missing North Koreans had engaged in a "well-planned conspiracy" to kill Kim.

Judge Azmi made the decision after the prosecution, led by deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad, withdrew the charge against Siti Aisyah, in accordance with Section 254 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). "I didn't expect it".

Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Rusdi Kirana, who attended the proceedings on Monday, expressed his satisfaction with the turn of events. They fled the country immediately after the murder and are now formally accused in the case.

Aisyah is expected to return home to Indonesia Monday evening, as officials make preparations for her departure.

Ms Siti has told a press conference that she was very happy with the court's decision, adding that the first thing she wanted to do was "to see my family".

Doan's murder trial was suspended following Monday's surprise turn of events.

Indonesia's Foreign Ministry brought Aisyah's parents to Jakarta, where they are expected to meet their daughter when she arrives, her mother Benah told CNN.

"We are hoping against hope that the charges against her will be dropped", said Teh Poh Teik, Huong's lawyer.

Huong's lawyer said she was "traumatized" that only Aisyah had been released, and the court agreed to adjourn the Vietnamese suspect's testimony to allow her legal team to apply for her murder charge to be dropped.

"She is entitled to the same kind of consideration as Aisyah", he said. "We are making representation to the attorney general for Doan to be taken equally ... there must be justice". He had been living overseas for years but could have been seen as a threat to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's rule.

Some South Korean lawmakers said the North Korean regime had ordered the assassination of Kim Jong Nam, who had been critical of his family's dynastic rule.
