Spring forward, but it could be for the last time

If that's not enough to make you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, remember that you'll also be losing an hour of sleep as we revert to Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Clocks will move ahead one hour across most of Canada at 2 a.m. local time Sunday, though some clocks in Toronto have already started to change.

But why do we fall back each November and spring forward in March?

Wikipedia describes, "Daylight Saving Time, also known as summertime in the United Kingdom, is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer while sacrificing normal sunrise times". On average, Americans lose 40 minutes of sleep when we set the clocks ahead in the spring.

Several studies have found Daylight Saving Time electricity savings are negligible - or non-existent. But back in 1916, Germany first implemented Daylight Saving Time during World War I when coal was in short supply.

Where is Daylight Saving Time not observed in the USA? Daylight Savings Time, while often used, is a misspelling. The Commonwealth has three major ports in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Erie and ranks ninth in the country for volume of goods moved through its ports, which is more than 100 million tons of goods coming and going from adjoining states and those all across the nation.

DST was instituted during WWI but abandoned soon after only to be revived in 1942 by President Franklin Roosevelt, again in an effort to conserve resources during a world war.

"Daylight Saving Time - or DST - also stands for Daylight Sunshine Time, providing welcome extra hours of sun after a cold winter", the Democrat from MA said in a statement. In 2019, Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are the only U.S. states and territories that do not observe Daylight Saving Time. People also report feeling disoriented and unproductive.

Bills to eliminate Daylight Saving Time have been introduced this year in Texas, Maine, New Mexico, Idaho, Wyoming, and Arkansas.

California isn't alone in its efforts to abandon the time changes.
