Kim, Trump open to U.S. liaison office in NKorea

Kim said he would not be sitting down with Trump if he were not ready to denuclearise but stressed that they were still thrashing out the concrete details.

Moon had hoped to follow the Trump-Kim meeting with his own fourth summit with Kim, preferably in South Korea's capital, Seoul.

What's on the table for talks?

Last year, after Trump spent more than two hours talking with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, Democrats tried to subpoena Trump's translator to testify in Congress about what was said.

The United Nations and the United States ratcheted up sanctions on North Korea when it conducted repeated nuclear and ballistic missile tests in 2017.

"You are on the cusp of a big, lovely deal", Rodman wrote in a letter addressed to President Trump and posted to Twitter on Wednesday night.

"What's important is that we do the right deal", said President Trump.

Little progress has been made on that and other issues since the first Trump-Kim summit in Singapore previous year.

Asked whether he was confident about the prospects for a deal, Kim replied: "Well, it's too early to tell, but I wouldn't say that I'm pessimistic".

In Hanoi on Wednesday, when they held a brief one-on-one chat and had a social dinner, the two again displayed outward signs of an unlikely bromance, clasping hands and appearing to share jokes as reporters shouted questions.

Asked if he would declare a formal end to the Korean War, which concluded with an armistice, rather than a peace treaty that North Korea has long sought, Trump said on Wednesday: "We'll see".

Earlier, North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un said he would welcome the opening of a U.S. liaison office in his capital.

Dropping the demand may vindicate intelligence assessments that allegedly indicate North Korea does not intend to fully denuclearize, NBC reported on Wednesday citing current and former USA officials.

"We have a lot of firepower, more than he has, times 20 - but we don't want to use it".

But questions persisted throughout the summit, including whether Kim was willing to make valuable concessions, what Trump would demand in the face of rising domestic turmoil and whether the meeting could yield far more concrete results than the leaders' first summit, a meeting in Singapore less than a year ago that was long on dramatic imagery but short on tangible results.

How will the day of talks unfold?

Republicans blocked it. The White House has never provided information on what Putin and Trump talked about.

"We couldn't quite get there today", Pompeo said, minimizing what seemed to be a chasm between the two sides.

Trump also tweeted about Kim, calling the North Korean leader his "friend" and describing the country's potential as "AWESOME".

"That is I think the ultimate goal here", said Mr Panetta, now chairman of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy.

Others think there's nothing wrong with the president's penchant for one-on-one meetings with world leaders.

North Korean state media have praised Mr Kim for making the 4,000km (2,500-mile) trip, with state paper Rodong Sinmun dedicating four out of its six pages to it.

Now the hard work really begins.
