Astronaut Mark Kelly announces bid for U.S. Senate

Former astronaut Mark Kelly announced Tuesday that he will run for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Arizona in 2020.

Retired Astronaut Mark Kelly on Tuesday said he will run for a Senate seat in his adopted home state of Arizona, giving Democrats an early chance at a seat they have not held since the late Sen. The special election is set to take place in November 2020 and the victor will complete the final two years of McCain's six-year term. Gabby Giffords, who survived being shot in the head at a public event in 2011.

Giffords and Kelly have been active on gun control issues in recent years. In it, Kelly said that he has seen a "retreat" from science, data and facts and asked for voters to help solve these problems. [.] I care about people, I care about the state of Arizona, I care about this nation. Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego, who represents parts of Phoenix, has been considering a run. His introductory video not only spends a good deal of time on his relationship with his wife, but you'll notice something else: He talks about the experience his mother had overcoming obstacles to become a police officer, but doesn't mention that his father was a police officer, too.

McSally, a blunt-talking former Air Force combat pilot, ran unsuccessfully for Arizona's other Senate seat in November, losing narrowly to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema. "Arizonans are facing incredibly challenging issues in the years to come: access to affordable health care, stagnation of wages, job growth, the economy".

Kelly participated in four space shuttle missions, and before that, had served in the navy as a pilot, including in the Gulf War in 1990-91. If elected he would serve out the remaining two years of McCain's six-year term.

Giffords, a former Arizona congresswoman, was shot in a 2011 assassination attempt while meeting constituents in Tucson.

Six others were killed in the attack. Jon Kyl, resigned after only a few months in office.

Mr McCain, a legendary and beloved Arizona politician, died a year ago from an aggressive form of brain cancer after more than three decades in the Senate. "I've made no secret of the fact that I'm looking seriously at running for the U.S. Senate in 2020, and that hasn't changed", Gallego posted on Twitter shortly after Kelly announced his campaign. Martha McSally, who was appointed in December by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey to fill McCain's seat.
