McConnell says Senate will vote on Democrats’ ‘Green New Deal’

"Give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal", McConnell told reporters on Tuesday. But the majority leader, and the rest of the GOP for that matter, might be too hasty in thinking it's an Achilles heel for Democrats.

The Green New Deal also promises to prioritize fighting climate change, pollution and other threats to the environment that risk undermining the sustainability of life on this planet.

So far, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker, who are all running for president, have co-sponsored the legislation.

Liz Cheney grilled environmental experts on their travel methods at a House hearing on climate change while discussing the Green New Deal's call to phase out air travel.

Schumer's aggression in finding a candidate to take on McConnell also reveals the animosity between the two Senate leaders, which has reportedly grown worse due to the shutdown and divisive judicial nominations.

President Trump made the Green New Deal a focal point of his first rally of 2019 Monday night in El Paso, mocking it as a "high school term paper that got a low mark".

Introduced by freshman Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., it has gotten some lip service from presidential hopefuls in the Senate, including Sens. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders co-sponsored the deal but has not said definitively whether he will run in 2020. The ambitious proposal has been spearheaded by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

But Democrats facing competitive reelection battles could find themselves vulnerable to Republican attacks on the issue - although voting "present" to avoid having to take a position on the matter is one potential strategy.

"I really don't like their policy of taking away your vehicle, of taking away your airplane rights, of 'let's hop a train to California, ' of you're not allowed to own cows anymore!" As a result, he accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his Democratic colleagues of conducting a "political stunt".

During the government shutdown last month, McConnell blocked an attempt by Senate Democrats to force a vote on a House-passed spending bill to reopen the government that lacked Trump's backing. "Unfortunately for Mitch, all he's going to do is show just how out of touch Republican politicians are with the American people". McConnell's aim is to split Democrats between the left-leaning members vying for the passions of their party's base and more moderate senators who view the proposal as radical and disruptive.

But Ocasio-Cortez is not deterred.
