Dramatic rescue of baby underway in Durban

When rescuers arrived, they discovered that the child, a little girl, was actually inside the concrete pipe, and set upon digging her out.

Wilks added that it wasn't known at this point how the little girl got stuck in the drain, but that an attempted murder case had been opened and the parents had not been located.

Lyron Lovdale climbed down inside the drain when he realised the noise might be a baby crying and shone a light into the pipe and saw the naked new born. "Durban fire department and the police search and rescue [unit] have cleared around the pipe and are trying to reach the child".

It took emergency workers several hours to get to her.

Emergency services were called after the cries were heard coming from a manhole by residents in Newlands East, near Durban in South Africa.

You can hear witnesses cheering as the baby is pulled to safety. "A helicopter is inbound to transport the baby to a nearby hospital as soon as possible", said Jamieson.

Mr McKenzie said when rescuers first arrived she was around 6ft down the drown but was then washed about 18ft further down the 1ft diameter drain.

She's been airlifted to hospital and is in a stable condition. The community was also very supportive and helpful which was great'.

The baby, who was found with her umbilical cord intact, was believed to be between one and three days old.
