Ronan Farrow Supports Jeff Bezos' AMI, National Enquirer Blackmail Claim

American Media Inc. issued a response to Amazon chief Jeff Bezos' accusation Thursday that the company attempted to "blackmail" him with salacious photos, saying they stood by their original reporting in the National Enquirer but that they would nevertheless "investigate" the matter.

AMI was apparently seeking a disavowal of statements in a story the Post published Tuesday exploring whether The National Enquirer's coverage of Bezos' affair - which featured intimate text messages between Bezos and Sanchez - was politically motivated.

The supermarket tabloid last month reported Bezos had an extramarital affair with a former news anchor, publishing a trove of private text messages. Afterwards, Bezos says he hired investigator Gavin de Becker to look into how the publication got a hold of their private communications.

NEW YORK: The stunning extortion claims made by Amazon and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos against the Trump-friendly National Enquirer tabloid have spotlighted a fierce behind-the-scenes media feud, taking place in an ever more toxic United States political climate.

On Friday, AMI said that at the time of Bezos' allegations it was "in good faith negotiations to resolve all matters with him".

Farrow has written extensively about AMI's "catch and kill" practice, in which the publisher buys stories in order to bury them, and how such measures benefited Pecker's pal, Donald Trump, in the 2016 presidential campaign.

And in his Medium post, Mr Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, pointed to AMI and David Pecker's previous cooperation with Mr Trump, including payments made to suppress negative stories, now under investigation by federal prosecutors.

The Enquirer article included text messages between Mr Bezos and Ms Sanchez, in which he wrote of his feelings for her and used endearments including "alive girl".

But Pecker and his Enquirer colleagues could face fresh criminal investigations based on the Bezos allegations, according to former federal prosecutor Jacob Frenkel.

He reprints no fewer than three emails that AMI's legal team sent him, one of which describes in detail the personal photos of Bezos they claim they've obtained.

Mr Bezos owns more than $120 billion in Amazon stock, according to Reuters.

Gavin de Becker, whom the Washington Post described as "Bezos' longtime private security consultant", has been conducting an investigation to determine the source of the leaks to the Enquirer.

In a deal announced with federal prosecutors late previous year, AMI said it would cooperate with those prosecutors.

Republican President Donald Trump and Bezos have crossed swords in the past, with Trump criticising both the Washington Post and Amazon, which Bezos owns. In his introduction to his descriptions of the photos, Howard appeared to make reference to an upcoming Post article that quoted de Becker.

A spokesman for Bezos declined to comment on whether he has contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation or other law enforcement authorities about American Media's actions.

Representatives of AMI had no immediate comment on Thursday.

If we do not agree to affirmatively publicize that specific lie, they say they'll publish the photos, and quickly. And of course it's possible that the Enquirer might have sought to destroy Bezos believing that it'd please Trump but without ever being asked to do anything by the president.

(AMI) - which owns The National Enquirer - David Pecker, threatened to publish explicit photos of him and Sanchez. President Trump is one of those people, obvious by his many tweets. Or at least that's what the top people at the National Enquirer thought.
