US Democrats unveil carbon-neutral 'Green New Deal'

Democrats on Thursday laid out a "Green New Deal" that would eliminate US greenhouse gas emissions within a decade, an effort to make climate change a central issue in the 2020 presidential race.

The New York Post reports that Pelosi "threw some serious shade on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - denying her a coveted spot on a special panel on climate change and brushing off her Green New Deal".

Pelosi told Politico in wide-ranging interview, however, that it's just a "suggestion" and one of "many" the caucus is likely to receive on green energy.

"No, I think it is a green dream", Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday when asked if she was offended by Pelosi's comments.

The proposals, which have come to be known as the Green New Deal, were crafted in conjunction with Senator Ed Markey of MA.

Congressional Democrats on Thursday unveiled an unprecedented plan to reverse climate change and eliminate all United States carbon emissions within 10 years, by taking drastic steps that would require transformational action across the economy.

The California Democrat did agree to launch a select committee on climate change, similar to the one she created back in 2007, when she first became speaker.

"The Green New Deal is a raw deal for the American taxpayer", said Wyoming Republican John Barrasso, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Pelosi wants this panel to work on educating people on the issue; she has already said it won't write any bills, at least not in this session.

The Green New Deal proposal is named after President Franklin Roosevelt's sweeping "New Deal" economic and labor reforms during the Great Depression.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who appeared to brush off the resolution as a "green dream" the day before, welcomed the "enthusiasm" with which Democrats were engaging in pushing the framework.

"Quite frankly I haven't seen it but I do know it's enthusiastic, and I welcome all the enthusiasm out there", the California Democrat said.

Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, said at a climate change hearing in the House natural resources committee on Wednesday that the policy was akin to a "Soviet five-year plan".

The Green New Deal was put into the media spotlight by a youth coalition called the Sunrise Movement and Ocasio-Cortez, 29, the youngest woman to serve in Congress.

Freshman progressives and other Democrats who have come to support the Green New Deal were frustrated when it was previously revealed the committee would lack much of the power that other congressional committees possess.

Pelosi said Reps. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Joe Neguse of Colorado, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Sean Casten of IL will serve on the panel, along with three Californians: Julia Brownley, Jared Huffman and Mike Levin.

Ocasio-Cortez's resolution also took heat from environmentalists upset that the means and goals outlined in the document did not go far enough.

The ambitious goal, according to the measure, is to achieve "net-zero greenhouse gas emissions", in part by meeting 100 percent of the power demand through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources.

One critical factor will be the buy-in of President Donald Trump, who pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord, as is seen by Democrats as the world's most prominent climate-change denier.
