United Kingdom and other European countries recognise Guaidó as Venezuela's leader

The Venezuelan military has barricaded a bridge at a key border crossing, Colombian officials said Wednesday, in an apparent bid to block humanitarian aid from entering the country.

On Monday, 16 European Union (EU) nations recognised Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim President, in a move backed by the USA, after Maduro failed to fulfil their demand to announce fresh Presidential elections by Sunday.

Critics have called last year's disputed presidential vote in which Maduro won re-election a sham, and the mainstream opposition boycotted it.

The White House has announced that Colombian President Ivan Duque and First Lady Maria Juliana Ruiz Sandoval will visit on February 13 to discuss pro-growth policies, terrorism and illicit narcotic networks, regional security partnerships and efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela.

The United States has pledged $20 million in aid that is to be gathered in Colombia, Brazil and an unnamed Caribbean island, but Guaido won't be able to bring it into Venezuela without the military's agreement.

He said: "We are not beggars".

Prime Minister Trudeau also reiterated his call on embattled President Nicolas Maduro to step down.

"We are prepared to work with the provisional government of Venezuela, the National Assembly and President Guaido".

The ministry said that it had initiated a conciliation procedure for a draft decision to support the transition to a democratic government in Venezuela based on the rule of law and respect for human rights. "They are willing to collaborate and I am sure that this will be one of the most important events, topics, elements in order to accomplish a way out in Venezuela", said Viera-Blanco, who has become the de-facto ambassador to Canada of Venezuela's interim government - whose authority Maduro rejects.

Guaido knows he also needs the armed forces on his side to dislodge Maduro, although he was boosted on Saturday by the defection of a top air force general.

Ten EU countries have yet to announce their position.

Some countries like Russian Federation and China have slammed foreign interference in Venezuela " s internal matters and supported Maduro as the President.

The United States, among some other countries, has recognized Guaido's presidency, and U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that "all options are on the table".

In response to the US, UK, Canada and many European countries coming out to officially recognize Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's interim president, Williamson reminded MPs in Parliament on Tuesday that US intervention in Latin American countries "never ends well". Maduro, on the other hand, accuses the United States of trying to topple his administration.
