Venezuela foils uprising by National Guardsmen; massive protest march announced for Wednesday

Protesters later burned trash and a auto outside the outpost, where the 25 officers were arrested, in a sign of growing tensions following Maduro's inauguration to a second term that governments around the world have called illegitimate. "He has never won the presidency in a free and fair election, and has maintained his grip of power by imprisoning anyone who dares to oppose him".

"As the good people of Venezuela make your voices heard tomorrow, on behalf of the American people, we say: estamos con ustedes".

"They were neutralized, surrendered and captured in record time", said Maduro's right-hand man, Diosdado Cabello on Twitter.

"Nicolas Maduro is a dictator with no legitimate claim to power", Pence said in a video message.

Their leader this time, taking the reins from a long list of better-known predecessors who have been exiled, outlawed or jailed, is Juan Guaido, the new president of the National Assembly who was dragged from an SUV just over a week ago by intelligence agents but quickly released amid an worldwide outcry.

Some two dozen officers attacked a National Guard outpost in the Caracas neighbourhood of Cotiza, a kilometre (0.6 mile) from the presidential Miraflores palace, where they met "firm resistance", the government said.

The disturbance early on Monday started after a group of men dressed in military fatigues and carrying assault weapons published a series of videos on social media saying they won't recognise Maduro's government.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence says Venezuelans have the "unwavering support" of the United States in their effort to restore democracy to their country.

Maduro was inaugurated for his second term earlier this month, after elections previous year that were widely condemned by the worldwide community.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the protestors before moving in to arrest the rogue troops. The pro-government Supreme Court, which annulled the powers of the congress in 2017, ruled on Tuesday to not recognise Guaido as its head and asked the state prosecutor's office to determine whether he had committed a crime.

Protesters burned trash and a auto outside the National Guard outpost where the officers were arrested in a sign of growing tensions following Maduro's inauguration to a second term, which governments around the world have called illegitimate.

Addressing members of the military on Monday, Guaido said: "We're not asking you to launch a coup d'etat, we're not asking you to shoot".

They surrendered after the command post was surrounded by police and military units, with 27 people arrested. "We want you out!", a group of residents chanted in the Catia...

The armed forces said a "small group of attackers" stole a batch of weapons from a command post in Petare, to the east of Caracas, and kidnapped four soldiers before heading to Cotiza. We need your support, ' he added.

Venezuela's vice president has accused her U.S. counterpart of "openly calling for a coup d'etat" ahead of Wednesday's mass street protest.

Many countries, including South American neighbors and the United States, have pressured Maduro to resign amid the country's massive economic and political crisis.
