Syrian air defences shoot down 'hostile targets': state media

The area is popular with skiiers.

Earlier on Sunday, Syrian air defences repelled an Israeli attack in the south of the country, bringing down seven missiles, SANA said. Russia's Ministry of Defense, according to RIA news agency, said four Israeli jets fired seven missiles at the worldwide airport, causing no injuries to Syrian nationals.

Israel has pledged to stop its main enemy Iran from entrenching itself militarily in neighboring Syria.

The military statement did not specify where the rocket had been launched from.

According to a Sputnik correspondent, another series of powerful explosions occurred over the Syrian capital at 1:15 local time on Monday.

Israel "operated under a certain threshold until two-and-a-half years ago", when he got "unanimous consent" from the government to change the rules of the game and dropped some 2,000 missiles against Iranian and Hezbollah targets in 2018 alone, he said.

Syria's air defense has shot down several targets, the agency added, without providing further details.

It has carried out hundreds of air strikes there against what it says are Iranian military targets and advanced arms deliveries to Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Israel typically refrains from commenting on individual airstrikes in Syria, but does generally acknowledge that it carries out raids against Iranian- and Hezbollah-linked targets in the country.

Israel rarely publicly confirms its strikes in Syria. Tel Aviv, Tehran's long-time regional opponent, has repeatedly expressed security concerns over an alleged Iranian military presence next to its borders in Syria.

State TV had said earlier that initial reports pointed to a terrorist attack, and that a number of people were injured.
