Trump vows United States missile defence in space, as Chinese hypersonic tech advances

"Countries are now stepping up", Trump said. The biggest single takeaway is the expanding definition of missile defense to more cohesively include non-ballistic threats, including cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons. Now that's changing. We're helping and we're able to spend money on technology and new defense, and far beyond defense systems.

The report underscored that point, saying: "The United States relies on deterrence to protect against large and technically sophisticated Russian and Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile threats to the U.S. homeland".

"DoD is developing a low-power laser demonstrator to evaluate the technologies necessary for mounting a laser on an unmanned airborne platform to track and destroy missiles in their boost-phase", the report said.

Pentagon officials contend that United States missiles defenses are too few to be able to counter a first-strike on the USA homeland by a major nuclear power like Russian Federation or China. "It won't happen, regardless of the missile type or geographic origins of the attack".

The new strategy is aimed at better defending the US against potential adversaries, such as Russian Federation and China, who have been developing and fielding a much more expansive range of advanced offensive missiles that could threaten America and its allies.

That will require new attack warning intelligence, time-sensitive targeting, and long-range precision, air-, land-, and sea-strike weapons for use against mobile missiles. Senior administration officials, asked whether there is still a threat from North Korea, deflected.

The United States will continue to rely on nuclear deterrence, the assurance that an attack on the US homeland from a major power would insure mutual annihilation, to protect against large attacks from Russian Federation or China.

Speaking ahead of the president Thursday, Acting Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan said North Korean and Iranian missiles "remain a significant concern" across the globe.

Missile defenses "must be continuously strengthened and expanded given the growing challenges posed by potential adversaries, particularly rogue states, who are contesting the established global order and deploying greater numbers of increasingly sophisticated offensive missiles", the report said.

"We are not interested in keeping pace with the emerging threats", Shanahan said in remarks before the president.

Senior administration officials earlier signalled their interest in developing and deploying more effective means of detecting and tracking missiles with an array of satellites in space that could, for example, use advanced sensors to follow the full path of a hostile missile so that an anti-missile weapon could be directed into its flight path. The administration's strategy will possibly entail a new layer of spaced-based sensors to spot enemy missiles.

Rood, along with Pentagon technology chief Michael Griffin and Missile Defense Agency head Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves, repeatedly declined to go into detail about what will be included in the budget.

The Pentagon warned in a report earlier this week that China's military was "on the verge of fielding some of the most modern weapon systems in the world". He said that more caravans are already forming and said the government is still shut down because Democrats refuse to fund border security.

The Pentagon plans to create a new space force as a component of the Air Force in ways similar to the Marine Corps as part of the Navy.

He outlined a number of changes that will be made to the country's defense capabilities, noting that the goal is to be able to detect and destroy any missile launched against the U.S. "When it comes to defending America, we will not take any chances. There is no substitute for American military might".
