Massive spinning ice disc forms in ME river

"It looks like the moon has landed in Westbrook, Maine!", it tweeted.

"It's certainly not every day that you can watch a spinning circle of ice in the river", Bertlesman said. "It's pretty wild to look at".

"There were ducks sitting on it", Mitchell told the Portland Press Herald.

A giant spinning ice disk has formed naturally in the Presumpscot River in Maine.

An eerily ideal - and big - circle of ice has appeared in the Presumpscot River.

Rob Mitchell, who owns the building where Bertlesman's company is based, told the Press Herald that he notified the city about the disk on Monday morning.

A behemoth disk of spinning ice formed in ME this week.

A Westbrook city official captured this incredible drone footage that shows the near-perfect disc moving around in a counterclockwise direction. "It was a big duck-go-round".

Its appearance has been likened to a moon, an alien creation, a crop circle and a giant Lazy Susan; regardless, a sprawling disk of ice spinning in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine, has people talking.

They occur at bends in the river where the accelerating water creates a force called "rotational shear", which breaks off a chunk of ice and twists it around.

According to published reports, the largest ice disk recorded was a 160-foot diameter circle in Sweden's Pite River in 1987.

The city, located about seven miles west of Portland with a population of fewer than 20,000, is basking in the sudden media glare.

Scientists say the formation of ice discs is rare but natural, but the surreal appearance of the disk has led to speculation of alien intervention.
