On the State Department website, the caution level has been raised to "Level Two", suggesting citizens "exercise increased caution" when visiting the country.

The Chinese regime's top prosecutor said January 3 that two Canadians detained after Canada arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou had "without a doubt" violated the law.

The South China Morning Post reported Friday the United States and China are set to meet again to discuss trade in Beijing next week.

The Chinese government has carried out a similar campaign, arresting Canadian citizens after Canada arrested the CFO of the Chinese tech giant Huawei at the request of the US, who accuse her of violating Iranian sanctions.

The United States, Australia and the European Union, including Germany and France, have all issued support for Canada, which is perhaps why China released these statements Thursday, attempting to clear the air'.

The thirteen include former diplomat Michael Kovrig and consultant Michael Spavor, arrested on December 10, for activities said to threaten national security, as well as Sarah McIver, who was subsequently freed and returned to Canada. However, due to the escalation of a diplomatic spat between China and Canada, the detention of three Canadians was officially revealed.

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay said high-level officials, potentially including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, should engage with China over the escalating dispute that has involved the detention of at least two Canadians.

"U.S. citizens may be detained without access to US consular services or information about their alleged crime", according to the warning.

Ankit Panda, a New York City-based writer, editor and worldwide affairs analyst, took to Twitter on Friday to say that he had chose to go ahead with a trip to China this month.

Meng faces extradition to the U.S. to face fraud charges, which she denies, linked to allegations of avoiding the United States sanctions on Iran.

What do we know of the recent detentions?

A Level 3 travel warning advises people to reconsider their travel, while a Level 4 warning says, "Do not travel", according to Anadolu Agency.

China is confident that two Canadian citizens detained since mid-December on counts of threatening China's state security have violated the law, a top prosecutor said Thursday.

"Either that, or it's a reaction to what they see as a kind of hostage crisis, now they've released the detainee who is most like an ordinary person", he said.

A statement said that detentions resulting from the exit bans could last "for years" and those arrested would be subject to the "arbitrary enforcement of local laws".

She faces extradition to the USA to face fraud charges, which she denies, that are linked to allegations of avoiding U.S. sanctions on Iran.
