Trump says United States officials to make plea to lawmakers for border wall

With Nancy Pelosi reclaiming her role as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Democrats are set to waste no time flexing their new power to try to end a 13-day partial government shutdown while ignoring President Donald Trump's demand for $5 billion for a border wall.

In 2013, during the Obama administration, 52 Democrats and 14 Republicans in the Senate supported a bill introduced by Chuck Schumer that included $46.3 billion in funding for border security. Democrats rejected the demand and parts of the federal government have been shut since December 22 because of lack of funding as a result. Beginning Thursday, Democrats would enjoy majority in the House of Representatives.

The Democratic package to end the shutdown would include one bill to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security at current levels - with $1.3 billion for border security, far less than Trump has said he wants for the wall - through February 8 as talks would continue.

Paul Ryan is no longer Speaker of the House as of today (and no one will miss him).

McCarthy said the group "never did get through the complete briefing" led by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Pelosi has said that Democrats will pass legislation to reopen government but not provide funding for a wall. Last month, he initially agreed to a budget deal without wall funding that would have averted a shutdown, but he reneged under pressure from conservative commentators.

"We're talking about national security".

"This is the Trump shutdown, through and through".

Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Democrats "are asking the president to open up the government".

Trump said there are as many as 35 million illegal immigrants in the United States, contradicting experts who say the number is far lower. To win, she needs a majority of all present and voting members of the House, which Democrats control 235-199, with one seat in North Carolina not yet decided.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers won't see a paycheck until the government reopens.

Trump spoke during a White House meeting with his Cabinet as the partial government shutdown continues into its 12th day.

The latter bill would allocate $1.3bn for border security measures, such as increased surveillance and fencing, but deny Trump's demand for $5.6bn to build 200 miles of fencing along the 2,000-mile border with Mexico.

After the meeting, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "I don't think any particular progress was made".

The president declined to answer any shouted questions from reporters who attended the briefing.

"It would be the height of irresponsibility and political cynicism for Senate Republicans to now reject the same legislation they have already supported", the Democratic leaders said. And B, we have better use of funds to protect our border.

"She'll cut your head off and you won't even know you're bleeding", Pelosi responded, without hesitation, adding: "That's all you need to know about her".
