Vehicle slams into NYE revellers in Tokyo injuring at least eight people

A auto is inspected by police after it injured several pedestrians on Takeshita Street in Tokyo, early Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019.

Manchester/Tokyo: Suspected incidents of terrorism were reported from United Kingdom and Japan on New Year's, leaving several people injured in both the countries.

A police spokesman said the driver had been detained and national broadcaster NHK said the man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. It was not clear if he was referring to a specific execution or capital punishment in general.

Police said a large tank filled with kerosene was found in the vehicle.

The attack occurred on Takeshita Street, which is a well-known shopping and tourist destination in the Harajuku area, near the Meiji Shrine.

According to local media, Kusakabe hit a total of eight people and assaulted another on the street, which was closed to auto traffic at the time as revellers crammed the area to celebrate the arrival of 2019.

He drove the wrong way on the one-way street and hit eight men aged between 19 and 51 while traveling around 140 meters, the police said.

A ninth person was injured after Kusakabe got out of the vehicle and punched him, police said.

Japanese television showed a grey coloured vehicle that was badly damaged in the front and dozens of police officers at the scene.

Every New Year's Eve, the train line that includes Harajuku station runs all night. Seven people were killed.
