Greece beats the United States on Serena Williams's return

"You can see how focused she is and that's what I love about her". "I was like, 'Oh, my God, this is so cool.' So it's just something that, as a player, is something that you would dream of, to play Roger Federer".

Federer spoke about how much he enjoyed the experience, saying: "It was great fun". "You know, I've been training in the off-season to be ready for Roger".

Federer and Swiss teammate Belinda Bencic beat Williams and Frances Tiafoe in a mixed-doubles match, winning the Fast4 format 4-2, 4-3 (5-3) in 46 minutes.

Federer and Serena then clicked a selfie on court as the 14,000 capacity crowd cheered on the legends on court.

"It was so fun".

Tiafoe was shaky to start and it looked it could get ugly when Federer won the opening six points.

"I felt a bit uncomfortable in the first match I played".

With 43 Grand Slam singles titles (Williams 23, Federer 20) and more than US$200 million in prize money between them, the two 37-year-olds had welcomed the chance to face each other on the court in an official match for the first time.

Defending champions Switzerland have two wins from two games ahead of Thursday's meeting with Greece, while the United States take on Great Britain next.

The much-hyped contest lived up to the billing immediately, with Federer nearly running down a Williams smash into the open court. Williams and Federer served strongly and were unable to return any of each other's serves in the first set.

Federer and Williams, of course, won't be the only players on the court in a mixed doubles match.

Williams grabbed at her right shoulder on several occasions late in the second set but played the match out.

"I didn't have enough time to reload the cannon. It's totally normal", she said.

Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Federer is also still going strong, having won the Australian Open previous year.

Williams led 4-1 in the first set before Bencic fought back to win the next five games.

Speaking at the Gala, Serena spoke about the difficulties of being a parent and called Federer "Superman" for being a father to twins.

From there Federer cruised to victory. His focus, he told The New York Times, was on the solo matches "because my goal is that she wins the Australian Open", which begins January 14.
