Pelosi Calls Trump Oval Office an 'Evidence-Free Zone'

Chuck Schumer, the senior Democrat in the still Republican-dominated Senate, and Nancy Pelosi, who is likely to become speaker in the newly Democrat-controlled House in January, bluntly told Trump that he had no chance of getting the $5 billion he wants for the wall.

"I will be the one to shut it down", Trump said Tuesday at a contentious White House meeting with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California, and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

Pelosi told reporters on Thursday that she hoped that Mr. Trump would not allow a government shutdown over funding for the border wall.

President Trump said he would shut down the government during an angry meeting with Democratic congressional leaders yesterday that played out in front of cameras in the Oval Office.

Trump is responding by saying he's "proud to shut down the government" and says he will "take the mantle".

Democrats have said they want to scrutinize Trump's tax returns to see whether he has any conflicts of interest. "Please don't characterise the strength that I bring to this meeting as the leader of the House Democrats, who just won a big victory", Ms. Pelosi said. In theory, if Democrats lose the House in 2020, she could serve beyond 2022 as Speaker if her party claws control later, but it's unlikely she could survive another Republican win.

Later, Pelosi said Trump talked so much about the border wall, "it's like a manhood thing for him".

At one point, he said that he would take responsibility for shutting down government if funding for the wall was not forthcoming.

Trump deployed the USA military to the border area before November 6 congressional elections, calling the caravan an "invasion".

"We wish to thank Nancy Pelosi for her willingness to work with us to reach this agreement", Vela and the others said.

'The president is so used to obsequious advisers who fail to dispel his false and made-up facts that he lives in a cocoon of his own truth, ' Schumer said on the Senate floor. In a recent Twitter tirade against the Democrats' reluctance to fund the wall, Trump warned that even if Congress doesn't secure the funding, the USA military would still finish the border wall.

Under the accord, Pelosi, 78, will support a three-term limit for the top three House Democratic leaders, with a possible fourth term if Democratic members vote by a two-thirds majority to retain them. "Leader Pelosi has signaled her commitment to transfer her knowledge and experience to the next generation of leaders so that they may effectively lead the Party into a new era".

"The question is where do we go from there", she said.

Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that Mexico would still technically pay for the wall, through the additional money the US will make from the not-yet-ratified United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.

An immigration enforcement advocacy organization contends that President Donald Trump must "put his money where his mouth is" and find a way to get his border wall funded.
