Border Patrol: 42 arrested for illegally crossing US-Mexico border

The United States closed its busiest border crossing with Mexico on Sunday after Mexican police broke up a protest of Central American migrants massed in Tijuana, scattering some demonstrators toward the border where US officers hurled tear gas from the American side.

Beto O'Rourke is speaking out against violence against migrants at the U.S. -Mexico border, urging the White House to "follow our own laws" and give asylum seekers the opportunity to petition for sanctuary, not lock them in cages or tear-gas them.

"If for any reason it becomes necessary, we will CLOSE our Southern Border."

Chief Patrol Agent of the Border Patrol's San Diego Sector explained on CNN that the officers at the border emitted tear gas because they were threatened by people entering illegally.

Large groups of migrants have tried crossing the border before, with a group of more than 100 clashing with Border Patrol agents in November 2013.

Throughout the day, U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopters flew overhead, while U.S. agents on foot watched beyond the wire fence in California.

That frustration bubbled over yesterday as a protest march by migrants turned into a chaotic scene, with people trying to breach the border fencing and United States authorities using tear gas to repel them.

Tensions on the border had been rising in recent days, with thousands of migrants camped out in a sports stadium in Tijuana and hundreds periodically gathering near the main border crossing.

As crowds amassed at San Ysidro, around 500 migrants overwhelmed federal and local Mexican police blockades and rushed toward the border, said freelance reporter Alfredo Alvarez, who is in the crowd. "Congress, fund the WALL!".

"We ran, but the smoke always reached us and my daughter was choking", Sarmiento said, visibly shaken.

The Mexican Interior Ministry also said Sunday it would immediately deport the migrants who tried to "violently" breach the border.

U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday to express his displeasure with the caravans in Mexico. "They pushed women and children up front, and then behind those women and children, they started throwing rocks, cement bricks. bottles at our Border Patrol agents", Judd said on "Outnumbered Overtime" Monday.

Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum on Friday declared a humanitarian crisis in his border city of 1.6 million, which he says is struggling to accommodate the crush of migrants.

However, video of the scene also showed a cloud of tear gas that sent people running and screaming, including families with young children. During his presidential campaign, he promised he'd have Mexico pay for a wall. McAleenan said he was not aware of any successful illegal entries by caravan members into the US. Border Patrol agents countered using "less lethal devices", which included tear gas and "other projectiles", but not rubber bullets.
