Alexander Zverev reaches ATP Finals semis then reminds Lendl who is boss

"That's the issue. But I've said it before", Zverev, whose 55 match wins this year is more than any other player, told reporters.

The second set went with serve until the seventh game, when Federer produced an immaculate sliced backhand that landed on the line to earn a break.

Alexander Zverev became the first German man in 15 years to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Finals after beating John Isner to book his spot in the final four.

Isner, who at 33 became the season-ending tournament's oldest debutant since 1972, applied himself admirably but barely avoided being broken a couple of times in the first set, and was broken twice more in the second set.

"I think he can still play better than he did today and that is really scary for everybody else who is involved in this event.' Zverev faded away considerably in the second set against Djokovic".

In stark contrast to second seed Roger Federer, Djokovic hit just six unforced errors and won 86% of points on his serve.

Zverev is emerging as one of the Tour's brightest young stars after climbing to fifth in the world and reaching the French Open quarterfinals this year.

Cilic wobbled briefly, handing the break back with a woeful game, but struck again with some bludgeoning groundstrokes and kept his composure to claim the win.

The victory helped the five-times champion to move within sight of the semi-finals. The match could have been a different scenario if Djokovic with the score 4:4 not played two break-point.

The net game always looked unsafe for Zverev and so it proved as he double-faulted to concede the set.

Djokovic had to wait a few hours to learn of his progress to the last four, which was confirmed thanks to a gritty fightback from former Wimbledon finalist Cilic.

Alexander Zverev says his mentor, Ivan Lendl, is a very nice guy but "I don't need to be put in a corner".

From there Djokovic won the next three games, dropping only one point, as he wrapped up his second win of the week.

Djokovic said: "It's great to be back in the 02, it's been a lucky place for me over the years". Anderson was left stranded as he tried to change his body shape but get couldn't get time to react as the ball just went past him in the subtlest of fashion.

Cilic's revival keeps him in with a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, while American eighth seed Isner still has an outside chance of advancing despite losing his first two matches.
