Ferocious winds whip California fires as death toll rises to 31

In Northern California, Sheriff Honea said Butte County consulted anthropologists from California State University at Chico because, in some cases, investigators have been able to recover only bones and bone fragments.

The Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record, and the death toll, which could rise, also makes it one of the deadliest.

The entire town of Paradise was wiped out and yesterday, hot and dry "devil winds" kicked up in fire-ravaged Southern California.

The fires, experts pointed out, have been fueled by dry conditions and extreme winds, and the conditions have been exacerbated by climate change.

Unfortunately wildfires are a part of life out in Southern California.

Some of the thousands of people forced from their homes were allowed to return, and authorities reopened US 101, a major freeway through the fire zone in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. About 8,000 firefighters using fire fighting equipment including helicopters and air tankers were battling the flames, with assistance coming from out of state. That blaze virtually burned the town of Paradise to the ground, destroying thousands of homes and structures.

Honea said his office had received more than 550 calls from people looking for missing friends and relatives.

It has consumed at least 85,500 acres and destroyed at least 177 buildings, officials said.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Woolsey fire has caused at least two confirmed deaths and has forced more than 250,000 people to evacuate their homes.

At least 31 people have died in the fires: 29 in the Camp fire and two in the Woolsey fire.

The team is said to have enough equipment to accommodate any assignment on the fire line or fire assistance for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Malibu resident Tony Haynes described how strong winds brought the fire through his neighbourhood during the weekend, with the sky growing dark, saying there was so much smoke he put on his scuba-diving tank to breathe.

PG&E said in a court filing Friday that it had found an outage on a transmission line in Butte County, about 15 minutes before the Camp Fire was first reported and in the area where it sparked.

The National Weather Service warned early Monday that "dangerous fire weather" was expected to continue in California.

A helicopter drops flame retardant on a wildfire on November 10, 2018 in Malibu, California. "Our hearts are broken from the horrific shootings and those who have lost their lives and homes, as well as the hundreds of thousands of us that have been evacuated from the devastating fires that are now burning".

Local residents were despondent over the fire damage. "Glad that her animals are okay hopefully you can rebuild a new house soon", another said. "And that's what hurts, those kinds of things hurt, because you can't replace that".

Brown asked Trump on Sunday to declare the fires a major disaster, a move that would allow more federal resources to flow to California to help with relief and recovery.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted threateningly from Paris, "There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor".

"We live next to a lake and have the firefighting choppers continuously flying in to refill before flying back to the fires". The Woolsey fire did not start on forested land.
