Thousands demand Mueller protection after Trump fires Sessions

Thousands of people are marching from Times Square to Union Square on Thursday evening in solidarity with nationwide protests demanding Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker recuse himself from the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, fearing he will end or limit the investigation.

The group Nobody Is Above The Law said on its website that the protests are planned in cities across the U.S.at 5 p.m. local time Thursday, and added that Trump "crossed a red line". Sessions was replaced by his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, who has been openly critical of Mueller's investigation.

Some protesters said they fear Trump is close to causing a constitutional crisis.

Trump repeatedly emphasized that he did not know Whitaker, whom he had tapped on Wednesday to lead the Justice Department on a temporary basis after forcing Attorney General Jeff Sessions out of the job.

Whitaker has questioned Mueller's authority to investigate aspects of Trump's election campaign and suggested how to end the investigation: by cutting its budget. Trump, a frequent critic of Acosta, said the reporter was a "very unprofessional guy" and insisted: "I don't think he's a smart person, but he's got a loud voice".

CNN's K-File also found comments by Whitaker from 2017 calling Mueller's appointment "ridiculous" and "a little fishy".

While Whitaker has made questionable comments that could create the appearance of a conflict of interest, there isn't an explicit conflict under Justice Department rules, as might arise if - for example - he had a family member under active investigation.

Meanwhlie, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee say Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should continue oversight of the Mueller investigation.

"Have a discussion about getting this on the schedule, and let's get this wrapped up, that would be my preference", Toomey told reporters at an unrelated event in Emmaus.

"When Sessions left, what I did very simply is take a man who worked for Sessions", Trump said.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, who has already called on Whitaker to recuse himself from the investigation, said it is "paramount" that Trump's new attorney general protect the Mueller investigation.

Protesters converged in cities nationwide to call for the protection of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's campaign. Other Senate-confirmed Department of Justice officials were available for the position, but Trump still went forward and tapped Whitaker. During a 2014 debate in Iowa when he ran for the Republican nomination for USA senate, Whitaker reportedly said he'd like to see federal judicial nominees be "people of faith" with a "biblical view of justice".

He's been described as a Trump loyalist and a possible threat to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.
