Fly Jamaica plane carrying dozens of Canadians makes emergency landing in Guyana

The plane, which had 120 passengers and eight crew members on board, had been in the air for about 20 minutes when the pilot indicated it was experiencing problems with its hydraulic system, Guyana officials said at a news conference. The aircraft returned to Cheddi Jagan, where it crash landed, eventually leaving the runway.

The same source also reported that a total of six people were hurt in the crash, but are stable and being treated at the Diamond Regional Hospital in Georgetown.

Of that number, six persons received minor injuries.

It says Flight OJ256 "suffered an accident on landing", but offered no other details on the nature of the accident or possible injuries.

A spokesperson for Fly Jamaica said it is providing local assistance for its passengers and "will furhter release information as soon as it is available".

It reports that there were 82 Canadians on board.

Invor Bedessee, a Toronto resident, took to social media shortly after the incident to post an account of his flight.

One of the aircraft's turbines is seen badly damaged after it apparently hit the barrier.

According to reports, the emergency services at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport knew that the flight, which was headed to Canada, was in trouble within 45 minutes of take-off. An inflatable slide was then deployed to help passengers evacuate the aircraft.

Fly Jamaica is an airline headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica and commenced operations in 2013.

Fly Jamaica said the airline is now making arrangements to fly the plane's passengers out of Guyana. The runway then was 2,255 metres long, but is now being extended to 3,048 metres.
