Boeing issues advice over sensors after Indonesia crash

A Lion Air passenger plane that crashed last week with 189 people on board experienced airspeed indicator problems on its last four flights, Indonesian investigators announced on Monday.

The operations-manual bulletin was issued Tuesday, Boeing said in a statement posted to Twitter, and tells flight crews to use existing guidelines when dealing with erroneous inputs from the so-called angle of attack sensor.

Attendees gathered on the deck of a ship that was ferried out to the crash site where Lion Air flight JT-610 plunged into the ocean at high speed.

The captain and first officer flying from Bali to Jakarta the night before the crash had indicators displaying differences in angle of 20 degrees, KNKT said, but that flight landed safely despite the issues in the air.

Boeing Russia declined RT's request to comment on the matter, referring to an earlier statement Boeing made following the crash.

Exhibiting similar problems, a recently delivered Lion Air Boeing 737 Max 8 passenger plane crashed into the sea off Jakarta, Indonesia nearly two weeks ago with 189 people onboard.

Boeing is preparing to send a warning to all the operators that have taken delivery of its new 737 Max aircraft, according to an anonymous source cited by Bloomberg.

The advice is based on preliminary information gathered in the investigation of a Lion Air flight that crashed in Indonesia last week killing all 189 on board, the person said. "Today a vehicle can have a faulty spark plug but eventually had its batteries replaced", said Ony.

An area that investigators will want to explore is how Lion Air addressed a recurring problem on the plane.

He maintained that the agency is now studying it based on the pieces of evidence they managed to recover so far that includes the plane's flight data recorder (FDR).

"We found a malfunction in an air speed indicator instrument in the last four flights, including the crash flight", Capt. Nurcahyo Utomo of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) told CNN on Monday.

There are more than 200 Boeing Max jets around the world, with orders for more than 4,700, according to Boeing's website.

"As an initial step we conducted ramp checks for 11 Boeing 737 Max 8", said transport minister Sumadi, adding that authorities were also conducting a special audit to include operating procedures and crew qualifications.

At least 105 body bags containing body parts of the passengers have been handed to the disaster victim identification unit of the national police hospital in Jakarta.

The Lion Air crash was the first involving the type of plane, which airlines introduced into service past year.

Indonesia's rescue agency said Sunday that wreckage spotted by divers had turned out to be only pieces of skin of the Boeing Co. jet rather than the main fuselage.
