Indonesia Plane Crash Search Finds Remains, Debris At Sea

Indonesian authorities said they would immediately begin examining a damaged black box retrieved on Thursday from the sunken wreckage of a Lion Air jet that crashed off Jakarta this week, killing all 189 people on board.

Indonesia's transport ministry said later on Friday that it had found "minor" faults in two other Boeing 737-MAX 8 jets, including a cockpit indicator display problem which an analyst said may be similar to one reported in the crashed Lion Air Jet.

The accident involving a new plane has stunned Indonesia, and President Joko Widodo ordered the transport safety commission to investigate.

The National Search and Rescue Agency said Tuesday that 10 intact bodies as well as body parts had been recovered.

"What we hope now is rescuers can find his body, so we can bury him properly, and authorities can reveal what caused the plane crash, " Sihombing said.

"That should show how the aircraft and pilots actually behaved", Fan said.

"I thought it was thunder, but it was different from thunder - 'Boom!' - It was loud", said Dadang Hambali.

"Today we will start diving [again] at the spot where we think the plane crashed", said Isswarto, commander of the Indonesian navy's search-and-rescue division.

A diver identified as Hendra said the box had been buried in debris on the floor of the Java Sea.

One of the pictures going viral is that of Captain Bhaye Suneja, the 31-year-old pilot from New Delhi. Teams from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing and General Electric Co, the maker of aircraft engines, have joined the investigation, according to the Indonesian government. If all aboard have died, the crash will be its second-worst air disaster since 1997, industry experts said.

It could take up to six months to analyse data from the black boxes, officials from Indonesia's transportation safety committee have said. But the single-aisle jet was subsequently cleared for commercial delivery and has had thousands of orders from more than 100 customers worldwide.

PK-LQP started to serve Lion Air's domestic routes shortly after its arrival in Indonesia on August 15. "He requested to return to the airport for RTB [return to base] but ... they updated and flew to Jakarta".

Two passengers from Sunday's flight posted on Instagram saying they had been concerned about problems with the air-conditioning system and cabin lighting before the plane left Bali almost three hours late.

The aircraft suffered a technical problem on a flight from the resort island of Bali to Jakarta on Sunday night but it was "resolved according to procedure", Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group, told reporters.

In a statement, Boeing said it is providing "technical assistance" to the investigators of the accident.

Navy personnel show a personal document of a flight attendant recovered from the crashed Lion Air flight JT 610 found during a search operation for the victims in the waters of Tanjung Karawang, Indonesia, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018.

Divers were searching an area about 25-35 metres deep, but have been finding fewer body parts than earlier in the week.

The search team has the location coordinates but still must confirm that it is the fuselage, he continued.
