Apple updates MacBook Air with Retina display, Touch ID

Apple's new MacBook Air starts at $1,199 (£1,199, AU$1,849), which is $200 more than the old MacBook Air.

Apple has launched a new updated MacBook Air, almost 3 years after it last updated the laptop, that has a Retina Display and TouchID. Another highlight feature is Touch ID, which is now found on as a key on the keyboard, and powered by the company's T2 chip. Intel's 1.6 GHz dual-core Core i5 and up to 1.5 TB of SSD storage makes this the fastest, most capacious MacBook Air to-date, and 8 GB or 16 GB of memory is healthy. Up to 16GB of RAM is on offer, and SSD storage tops out at 1.5TB, meaning there's a proper spec boost over the old Air.

You get two Thunderbolt 3 ports, through which you can connect a 5K display or even an eGPU if you so wish.

Apple said the new laptop is also made from 100% recycled aluminium and is 10% thinner than the previous model, at 15.6mm thick and taking up 17% less volume.

Professional users will also have to decide if they want to go for the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro laptop, updated in 2018 with 8th-generation Intel processors and improved RAM, storage, and battery.

The device is available for pre-order today and will begin shipping on November 7.

The previous MacBook Air model is still available at $999.

The new iPad Pro will use facial-recognition technology to unlock the device and authorize app and Apple Pay purchases. The company says the device will get 12 hours of battery life through Web browsing. The FaceTime camera will remain at the top of the display, however.

Apple has designed a custom aluminum alloy which is being used for the first time in the new MacBook Air. The display has also been bumped to 1,400 x 900, which matches the latest MacBook Pro. Like we saw with iPhone and the price tag creeping up to the $1k point, if you want Apple's latest then you need to open your wallet wider. "In addition to the Retina display, the bezel is gone, with the 13.3" display going right to the edge of the enclosure.

The 13.3-inch screen crams 4 million pixels onto the screen and Apple says the borders around the edge of the screen are "50% narrower" than before. The new MacBook Air should come to India by the end of the year.

Lastly, as we are massive audiophiles here at T3, we were also impressed with the new MacBook Air's upgraded audio system.

How much does the MacBook Air cost?

.

All told, it's a better design in terms of portability, but it doesn't leave much room for power similar to that of what the MacBook Air held against contemporaries of the time.
