Almost 100 airstrikes - Islamic Jihad declares ceasefire with Israel

Israel has said it blames Islamic Jihad, one of the coastal enclave's two main Islamist militant factions, for the rockets.

It blames Iran for orchestrating the rocket attacks against Israel, which were carried out by Islamic Jihad.

The Israeli military also shot and killed four Palestinians and wounded 232, 180 of them from live fire, during protests along the border with Gaza on Friday, Palestinian medical officials said. Other targets included the entrance to a tunnel dug to infiltrate and attack Israel, and an anti-aircraft observation post, it said.

As part of the fragile agreement, Israel would now allow material for those projects to enter Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The Israeli military said it holds Hamas responsible for anything that happens in Gaza.

"Part of the address by which we will deal with this fire is also in Damascus and the Quds Force", he said.

Conricus told reporters Israel's response "is not limited geographically". Ten of the rockets, that the IDF said were flying from Gaza, were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, one of the armed groups that operates in Gaza, said it had fired the rockets in retaliation for Israel's killing of four Palestinian protesters on Friday near the border. Protesters allegedly breached the border fence during two instances.

In Gaza City, an airstrike hit an abandoned, unfinished building, flattening the three-story structure.

Instead, IDF released footage of a strike on what it claims was the "Hamas Security Services HQ" in Gaza.

In response to the rocket barrages, the IDF's Home Front Command overnight issued instructions restricting gatherings in the Gaza periphery: Up to 100 people in open areas and 500 people in closed spaces.

Palestinians have gathered for protests along the Gaza Strip's border at least weekly since March 30.

Gaza's Ministry of Health, meanwhile, said that air strikes had targeted the perimeter of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, causing material damages to the building.

A sixth died when a hand grenade he was holding exploded accidentally, witnesses said.

Shortly after the IDF announcement that it had struck the Hamas headquarters in Gaza, rocket sirens sounded in Israeli communities Sha'ar HaNegev and Sderot.

"We hold Hamas responsible for everything coming from Gaza", he said.

The sudden burst of fighting and bloodshed complicated the mission of Egyptian mediators, who have intensified shuttle diplomacy to achieve calm and prevent a full-blown conflict between Hamas and Israel.

Egypt wants to restore calm in order to pursue the broader goal of Palestinian reconciliation between Hamas and the West Bank-based administration of President Mahmoud Abbas.
