Arrest Made in Connection with Mailing of Suspicious Packages

Geoffrey Berman, US attorney for Southern District of NY, called Sayoc's conduct "cowardly and reprehensible and totally anathema to our democracy".

Sayoc declared bankruptcy in 2012, according to a court filing that said he lived with his mother at that time.

Lowy told The Associated Press that Sayoc "made a verbal threat when he was frustrated at a lack of service".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in a Friday afternoon press conference that Sayoc is facing five federal charges: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and others, threatening interstate communications, and assaulting federal officers.

The lawyer said Sayoc was a bodybuilder then and displayed no political leanings, except for plastering a vehicle he owned with Native American signs.

Criminal records show Sayoc was arrested on multiple other occasions for fraud, tampering with evidence, drug possession and unlawful use of a driver's license.

All of Sayoc's targets have been critical of President Trump, and all have been the subjects of the president's ire. His van was taken away by the Federal Bureau of Investigation this morning, and it is completely covered in pro-Trump stickers.

Three packages were recovered Friday: one in Florida addressed to New Jersey Democratic Sen.

FBI Director Christopher Wray referred to the 13 explosive devices recovered so far as "IEDs", an abbreviation for improvised explosive devices.

The account also features threats against film director Ron Howard and former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who was one of those targeted by the mail bombs. Booker's package was found in Florida.

The Clapper package, as with one sent on Wednesday to former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, were marked care of CNN, a television network often critical of the administration and long provoking Trump's ire.

An earlier package had been sent to former Obama CIA Director John Brennan in care of CNN in NY.

"I can tell you this: we will find the person - persons responsible, and we're going to bring them to justice", Sessions said. But they were uncertain whether the devices were poorly designed or never meant to cause physical harm.

"I thank God no-one's been hurt, and I thank the fearless and resourceful security and law enforcement people for protecting us", De Niro said in a statement.

Several of the packages went through a USA postal facility in Opa-locka, which is less than 10 miles from Aventura, where the suspect resides.

Earlier Friday, authorities intercepted suspicious packages intended for Sen.

Most of those targeted were past or present US officials, but one was sent to actor Robert De Niro and billionaire George Soros.

Clinton was among the frequent Trump targets sent pipe bombs this week. The return address is that of Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz's district.

All of them were sent to people who have criticized or clashed with President Donald Trump, and authorities continued to warn Friday that others could still be out there.

The investigation into this week's wave of suspicious packages focused on southern Florida and a mail sorting facility in the area.

New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill could not confirm whether all the devices were meant to explode, but he said officials "are treating them as suspected explosive devices".

"This last question that I thought Wray gave a very weird answer to when he was asked "when did you tell the White House, when did you tell the president", and [he] wouldn't answer that", said Miller, pointed out that in reality the answer should always be "immediately".

New York Police stand outside the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018 in New York. It was found at a New York City postal facility and was similar to the other packages, the official added.

Though none of the improvised explosive devices actually detonated, Wray stressed that "these are not hoax devices".
