Lottery fever spreads in anticipation of $1.6B Mega Millions jackpot

Tomorrow's Powerball lottery prize stands at US$620 million, making it the fifth largest jackpot in USA history, after no one got all six numbers in Saturday's drawing.

With the odds of winning at 1 in 302 million for a single ticket, experts say you're more likely to be elected President of the United States, or canonised as a saint.

Gilliland said five $50,000 Powerball tickets were sold in Fredonia, a northern Arizona city, Tucson and Phoenix since October 13 and nine $10,000 Mega Millions tickets were sold, mainly in the Phoenix area, since October 12. The prize has yet to be claimed.

The prior Mega Millions jackpot record was $656 million, which was shared by winners in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland. The next drawing will be Wednesday.

The $1.6 billion estimated jackpot would be the largest prize in USA history. Several states permit online ticket purchases.

After sundry federal and state taxes and fees, the victor can expected to get about 60 per cent of the payout if he or she accepts it in one lumpsum, instead of the option of taking it in equal installments over 30 years. The odds are low, about one in 300 million. "I believe if I win I will go ahead and hire somebody to fix it". But because the player added the Power Play for an extra $1, the prize is $2 million. Some states don't even sell lottery tickets, and the rest have deadlines for purchasing a ticket.

The odds of winning Powerball are 1 in 292.2 million.

But that $1.586 billion prize - payable in annual installments over 30 years - came with an up-front cash option of $983 million. If this can go past $1.6 billion this would be fantastic. Lottery revenue represents a small fraction of the department's overall budget - the $32.3 million it received for fiscal year 2019 makes up just 1.42 percent of the money in the department's funding formula. "But I can assure you this is the most we have ever sold". If it seems like these astronomical numbers are happening more frequently, it's because they are. New York, with the nation's fourth-largest population, leads with seven winners.
