Migrant Caravan Begins To Cross Into Mexico From Guatemala

Thousands of people travelling across Central America en masse to the USA have resumed their journey to enter the country from southern Mexico.

In addition to those who crossed the river, immigration agents processed migrants in small groups and then bused them to an open-air, metal-roof fairground in Tapachula, where the Red Cross set up small blue tents on the concrete floor.

"We're going to make it, we're going to keep moving so long as they don't stop us", said Honduran Jaffe Borjas, 17, marching alongside a childhood friend at the head of the giant column that stretched far down the highway to the horizon.

"I am watching the Democrat Party led (because they want Open Borders and existing weak laws) assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, whose leaders are doing little to stop this large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS, from entering Mexico to US..."

As the day wore on, migrants began jumping from the bridge and swimming to the Mexican side or climbing aboard makeshift rafts, which ferried them to shore.

The caravan elicited a series of angry tweets and warnings from Trump early in the week, but Mexico's no-nonsense handling of the migrants at it southern border seems to have satisfied him more recently. City police officer Luis Fernando Mejia Morales said "the instructions are to treat them kindly". It was unclear how numerous group were from the migrant caravan and how many were Mexicans who joined the march.

As the sun rose, a military helicopter flew along the Mexican side of the river foreshadowing the difficulties they could face.

The migrants are fleeing their country because of violence and poverty.

President Trump threatened in a series of tweets on Thursday to "call up the USA military and close our SOUTHERN BORDER" if Mexico doesn't do anything to stop the flow of migrants moving north.

"Violent entry into the country not only threatens our sovereignty, but also puts the migrants themselves at risk", Pena Nieto said in a video published on his social media profiles.

At the front of the caravan, one group briefly broke through the final fence before police forced them back and closed it again.

The Mexican government assured the Trump administration it would secure its borders while prioritizing the human rights and protections for children and pregnant members of a migrant caravan heading north.

Approximately 640 migrants requested asylum in Mexico, according to a statement from the Mexican government and the National Migration Institute.

Mr Selee said Mexico would "try to defuse the crisis" the same way they did with the last migrant caravan: by giving some people legal status or the chance to apply for asylum and deporting others. "And we're gonna have the military stationed", Mr. Trump said.

Most of the migrants that Reuters spoke to said they had no idea how to get the documentation needed for Mexico.

"A lot of people say 'I wonder who started that caravan?'" he said.

The president on Saturday labeled Democrats as "obstructionists" in a tweet and said that if they would come together, new immigration laws could be agreed upon in "less than one hour".

Trump has also threatened to cut foreign aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. "No one will stop us, only God, " he said.

"So as of this moment, I thank Mexico, " Trump said Friday at an event in Scottsdale, Arizona.

"We are not criminals, we are workers!"

"They're not coming into this country", Trump added.
