Trump threatens to close Mexican border over migrant caravan

Migrants in the mass caravan started chanting that "one way or another, we will pass". And what will happen if they do?

The Guatemalan government branded the caravan "illegal".

The group of Salvadoreans, Hondurans and Guatemalans say they are fleeing violence and poverty.

According to media reports, Mexico has dispatched extra police to its southern border with Guatemala.

A bridge over the river marks an official crossing point.

Erika Guevara-Rosas of Amnesty International said in a statement: "Mexican authorities should not take a Trump approach treating people like a security threat".

As the mass of humanity strung out from Guatemala City to the border, it was unclear whether those who made it the farthest would wait for their countrymen to arrive before attempting a mass crossing into Mexico. Those who do so will be held "at a migratory station" for up to 45 business days.

Those who apply for refugee status will be vetted by United Nations officials at the immigration shelters on the border.

The head of Mexico's federal police says that they have achieved their first objective of preventing a violent breach of the border by some 3,000 migrants trying to enter from Guatemala.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry is responding to the caravan of around 2,000 migrants that is traveling from Honduras toward Guatemala, aiming to reach the US-Mexican border. A complicated mix of pressures are weighing on Mexican officials as they decide how to handle the matter.

Foreign Minister Videgaray said his government had asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help process the migrants in order to guarantee transparency and so that Mexico could cope with a "higher volume of requests".

Mexico has rushed to contain the situation.

It also was not clear Thursday if the military could legally be used to shut down the U.S. -Mexico border.

If Trump pulls out of the trade deal or closes the border, there would be major economic implications for both countries.

Despite their sharp differences, the U.S. and Mexico have made progress on several issues, including the signing of an updated transcontinental trade pact, the U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

At least five US states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a policy to separate migrant children from their parents, since discontinued.

"Mexico is in favor of legal, safe and orderly migration", he noted.

The threat followed another one earlier this week to cut off aid to Central American countries if the migrants weren't stopped.

Mr. Pompeo is expected to meet with Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray, Foreign Secretary-designate Marcelo Ebrard, and departing President Enrique Peña Nieto. So that makes any worldwide policy negotiations tricky.

"We will offer jobs, work to Central Americans".

"We are going to the United States!" he shouted euphorically.

"We are quickly reaching a point which appears to be a moment of crisis", stated Pompeo.
