Hunter Dies From Rare Brain Disorder After Possibly Eating Squirrel Brains

A MAN has died from an extremely rare virus dubbed "Squirrel Disease" after reportedly eating the brains of a dead squirrel.

In 2015, the 61-year-old man was brought to a hospital in Rochester, New York, after experiencing a decline in his thinking abilities and losing touch with reality, the report said.

According to a report presented at IDWeek-which discusses infectious diseases-the unnamed man developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

In this case, eating contaminated cow meat wasn't the issue - another animal was to blame. Researchers say the man's family said he was known to eat squirrel brains and that may have increased his risk for the disease, in a new report out this month in Live Science. However, it was not clear if the man had consumed the entire squirrel brain or just squirrel meat that was contaminated with parts of squirrel brain, according to Dr. Tara Chen, a medical resident at Rochester Regional Health and lead author of the report.

The symptoms of the rare ailment are similar to those of mad cow disease. While it often occurs with no known cause, it can be hereditary in people who have a family history of the disease or contracted when the brain or nervous system is exposed to the disease.

In the United States, the man contracted a deadly disease after they ate the brains of dead squirrels.

There is no treatment or cure for CJD.

Non-Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease - a similiar disease - is also rare and tends to affect older people.

Doctors at Rochester Regional Health wrote in the report that they were shocked when four suspected cases of CJD were presented between November 2017 and April 2018 because the disorder is so rare. Most people develop the disease spontaneously, while a few inherit it.

The high number caused doctors to review all suspected cases at the hospital between 2013 and 2018.

An MRI examination and a test of his cerebrospinal fluid revealed the proteins that usually trigger "mad cow disease".

Worldwide, more than 220 variant CJD patients have been reported, with a majority of them in the United Kingdom (177 cases) and France (27 cases).

However, CJD can be confirmed only with a test of brain tissue on autopsy at death.
