Nurses Can Empower African-American Women in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

If there is a family history of breast cancer, consulting a physician regarding the appropriate age to begin screenings could be lifesaving.

American Cancer Society estimates that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. Statistics show that one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, and about 40,920 women in the US are expected to die in 2018 from the disease, according to Breastcancer.org.

However, breast cancer is also a battle that can be won, if detected early on.

As survival rates have increased, and the number of deaths associated with this disease is steadily declining, largely due to factors such as earlier detection, a new personalized approach to treatment and a better understanding of the disease. Some warning signs of breast cancer include a lump in the breast or armpit, nipple discharge, any change in the size or shape of the breast or pain in the breast. We need to be funding more research. It is very important for women to have regular screening mammography as a part of their general healthcare maintenance. "It can find invasive breast cancers sooner than mammograms, and it can rule out abnormalities that appear suspicious on a mammogram". In the meantime, she recommends that women who can afford it ask for 3-D imaging when its time for their annual mammogram.

Most women begin getting mammograms at 40 or 50, depending on which screening guidelines they and their health care providers choose. For the average woman, its about 12.5 percent; for high-risk women, its 20 percent or higher.

The start of October rings in Breast Cancer Awareness month. The team consists of radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, reconstructive surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, genetics and risk assessment, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and other support staff. Tonight there is a special event to raise money for the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer at a Chico restaurant and bar. "As well as continued financial investment, we need to see greater reflection on the processes put in place when things are missed". "This year Vitas House Hospice proudly celebrates 10 years of providing quality care to terminally ill patients with cancer".
