Africa's Youngest Billionaire Kidnapped Outside Luxury Hotel In Tanzania

Police have mobilized across Tanzania to search for a man described as Africa's youngest billionaire after he was kidnapped by gunmen Thursday morning in the nation's capital, Dar es Salaam. He was abducted by two foreigners, the Swahili Times reported on Twitter, citing Mambosasa.

Mr Dewji was born in Tanzania and studied at Georgetown University in the United States.

Dewji, 43, is the owner of Tanzanian industrial conglomerate MeTL Group and has served as a lawmaker for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.

It is believed that the abductors had access to guarded hotel grounds because its gates were "believed to have been left open deliberately", suggesting that they may have had help from hotel staff. Mambosasa also revealed that several suspects, including hotel staff, were interviewed and multiple arrests have already been made. "They shot in the air once and the hotel's security guards scampered for safety", the driver said.

In 2013 he became the first Tanzanian to grace the cover of Forbes magazine, and was in 2015 named Forbes Africa Person of the Year.

Dewji was kidnapped as he entered the gym of a luxury hotel in Dar es Salaam.

According to The Guardian, the regional governor, Paul Makonda, said Mr Dewji was kidnapped by whites travelling in two vehicles.

Dewji is Africa's youngest billionaire and runs the METL group, a family business founded by his father in the 1970s, that operates across six African countries. According to Forbes, the billionaire signed the Giving Pledge in 2016, promising to donate at least half his fortune to philanthropic causes.
