Google to shut down Google

The Wall Street Journal reported that Google executives opted against notifying users earlier because of concerns it would catch the attention of regulators and draw comparisons to a data privacy scandal at Facebook. Thankfully, according to Google, no developer was aware of the bug, was misusing the Google+ API, or had misused private data from users' profiles. From 2015 to March 2018, the APIs made it possible for developers to view profile information not marked as public, including full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation, and relationship status.

Google now joins both Twitter and Facebook in disclosing a privacy breach in the past three weeks.

Smith defended the decision not to disclose the breach, writing: "Whenever user data may have been affected, we go beyond our legal requirements and apply several criteria focused on our users in determining whether to provide notice". The lawsuit was blocked in the High Court on Monday.

Google+ for consumer will be shuttered.

Ben Smith, Google's vice president of engineering, confirmed in a blog post the company had detected a "bug" in March that impacted the profiles of as many as 500,000 Google Plus users.

Just as the Wall Street Journal was posting an article that dove into the data exposure, Google announced Project Strobe. The bug allowed for developers that had access to Google+'s API to access information of users that gave permission to the program. The search giant states that it wasn't able to maintain "a successful Google+ product that meets consumers' expectations".

Under the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), if personal data is breached, a company needs to inform a supervisory authority within 72 hours, unless the breach is unlikely to result in a risk to the rights and freedom of users.

For action 1, Google+ for consumers is shutting down.

Many have long suspected that Google+ was in its final days, but nearly no-one could have predicted it would end like this. The software flaw affected how the social network, created to rival Facebook but never seriously challenging it, interacted with third-party applications. For example, 90 percent of G+ sessions latest less than five seconds. The company did not check up with any of the developers of the aforementioned 438 apps.

I don't use social media that much and used Google+ only to publish links to new articles. It analyzed third-party developers' access to Google account and Android device data to measure whether permissions were overly broad.

Over the coming months, Google will update users with additional information, including ways to download and migrate data.

Secondly, access to the Gmail API is going to be limited to only those apps that directly enhance email functionality.
