Pompeo hails ‘progress’ after talks with Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo agreed to arrange a second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump "as soon as possible", and discussed potential U.S. inspections of North Korean nuclear sites, South Korea's presidential office said Sunday.

"Well, I am really pleased for this opportunity".

Beyond pressure from the president, Pompeo and his team are also facing growing pressure from China, Russia and even South Korea to ease sanctions on North Korea.

North and South Korea want a "phased" approach with Pyongyang rewarded as it it happens.

President Moon Jae-in of South Korea, who is helping with negotiations, said there will be another meeting between the two leaders as soon as possible.

This photo taken from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's tweet on October 7, 2018, shows him meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (L) in Pyongyang. I will give more details later when we are alone", only adding, "I have had a good and productive conversation today.

Moon said he hoped that Pompeo's visit and a second US-North Korea summit would provide a chance to take "a decisive step forward in the denuclearization and peace process on the Korean Peninsula". "It was another step forward", Pompeo said in a meeting with Moon at the Blue House. Trump promised North Korea security guarantees and "new" relations. It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.

While in Japan, Pompeo will meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Foreign Minister Taro Kono before he heads to North Korea for just hours on Sunday.

There was no immediate indication whether Mr Pompeo had managed to arrange a much-anticipated second summit between Mr Kim and USA president Donald Trump.

"As President Trump said, there are many steps along the way and we took one of them today", Pompeo told Moon.

South Korea has moved forward with various joint projects, but the USA has remained skeptical of North Korea's intentions, and officials have criticized what they view as a slow pace to Kim Jong Un's denuclearization.

Then there is the reality that Trump's North Korea policy is unsustainable, something Trump himself likely understands .

He did not meet Kim during that trip, which ended on poor terms.

After a meeting in July, Pompeo said the two sides made progress, but North Korean officials accused him of making "gangster-like" demands.

"I hope Secretary Pompeo's North Korea visit and the upcoming second U.S".

While Pyongyang has not yet signaled that it is ready to offer any such list, North Korea did, during last month's inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang, put forward a new proposal: It would dismantle its Yongbyon nuclear facility in return for "corresponding measures" from the United States.

Congolese gynecological surgeon Dr. Denis Mukwege and Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad will each receive a 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.

North Korea's acceptance as a nuclear state could also rattle the decades-long Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty and trigger a nuclear arms race in Northeast Asia by leading many in Seoul and Tokyo to question the American guarantee to protect its allies.

South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha has given a hint of what a grand bargain between the two countries could look like.

The Beijing visit could be tense as it comes days after U.S. Vice President Mike Pence delivered a blistering speech accusing China of military aggression, commercial theft, rising human rights violations, and electoral intervention against Trump.
