Three newborn babies stabbed at daycare centre in New York City home

Three babies and two adults were stabbed in an attack in the Queens area of NY overnight.

The victims - two little girls and a boy, plus two adults - were in stable condition Friday at local hospitals, NY police said.

The three girls stabbed are a three-day-old, a 20-day-old and a one-month old, NBC reported.

The suspect, identified as a 52-year-old woman, was found in the basement of the home with self-inflicted cuts on a wrist, according to the station.

The red brick, multifamily house on a tree-lined street in the Flushing area of Queens appeared to be used as a day care center, though state officials said it was not licensed.

Police say the incident began with the stabbing of the female co-worker before the father intervened and was injured.

A police officer stands guard at the house were five people were stabbed overnight, Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, in NY.

Two knives were recovered, police said.

A female day care worker was also stabbed, as well as a 31-year-old man. Prosecutors said they were aged 13 days, 22 days and 33 days.

The New York Post quoted an unidentified "high-ranking source" as saying that the home was also serving as a "citizenship mill".

The city's Buildings Department had received several complaints against the property, including the possibility that it was being illegally used as a hotel, records show. Someone called 911 and the suspect is now in police custody at the hospital. Among the questions was whether the place was operating as an unlicensed childcare facility. It's not clear if any of the stabbed babies were the male victim's child.
