WaPo Investigator: Kavanaugh Accuser Believes Feinstein Kept Her Promise

John Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, called Monday for "bipartisan participation" in addressing sexual assault allegations against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh that have thrown the prospects of his pending confirmation vote into chaos.

Kavanaugh, 53, whose confirmation had seemed to be on a smooth trajectory, went to the White House on Monday. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., before Thursday's scheduled vote. Democrats on the panel refused to take part, arguing that the FBI should investigate the allegations stemming from an incident Ford says happened at a party in the early 1980s when they were both students in high school.

One of them, Sen. After his confirmation, in an ABC News / Washington Post poll, 62% of Americans said Thomas should have been confirmed compared to 34% who said he should not.

"I've made it clear that I'm not comfortable moving ahead with the vote on Thursday if we have not heard her side of the story or explore this further", Flake told The Washington Post. "Flake that we should delay this week's vote", Feinstein said.

"He also has been lauded from women from every aspect of his life and this is significant. for a man of character and integrity to be spoken about so highly by women who maybe didn't vote for President Trump, maybe don't call themselves Republicans", Conway said, referring to a letter from 65 women who knew Kavanaugh since high school. Kavanaugh came to the White House amid the upheaval, but there was no immediate word on why or whether he had been summoned.

The testimonies "would be added to the very considerable mountain of evidence and considerations that folks will have when they weigh whether or not to vote for Judge Kavanaugh to be on the Supreme Court".

Ilyse Hogue, the president of NARAL, said that the Judiciary Committee that is overseeing Kavanaugh's nomination is not in a position to obtain a credible denial from the nominee in the face of Ford's allegation. "She should testify under oath and she should do it on Capitol Hill". She allowed her records from a therapy session about it to be reviewed by The Post. Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committee chairman, said, "Anyone who comes forward as Dr. Ford has deserves to be heard, so I will continue working on a way to hear her out in an appropriate, precedented and respectful manner". Susan Collins, R-Maine, tweeted Monday that Kavanaugh and Ford "should both testify under oath before the Judiciary Committee".

Backlash to Hill's treatment by then all-male Senate Judiciary Committee in 1991 is widely accepted to have helped usher in the so-called "Year of the Woman" in 1992, when the number of women in the Senate doubled from two to four.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations, saying in a statement on Monday to the New York Times that he had "never done anything like what the accuser describes - to her or to anyone".

Kavanaugh says in the statement he "had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself".

"I noticed the date of the letter and wondered why the information had not been released long ago", she said.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Judiciary panel, said in a statement Monday night that she was disappointed the Federal Bureau of Investigation and White House "are failing to take even the most basic steps to investigate this matter" and that the process was being rushed. Kavanaugh denies the allegation, but his...

Ford tells The Washington Post a drunken Kavanaugh groped her and tried to take off her clothes at a party when they were teenagers in the 1980s.

"She's willing to do whatever it takes to get her story forth", Katz said on NBC's "Today" show when asked whether her client would speak publicly about Trump's Supreme Court nominee.

Republicans say the allegations have already cast a shadow over Mr Kavanaugh but that it does not appear to be enough to change the votes in the narrowly divided 51 - 49 Senate.
