Browns to release troubled receiver Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon's rocky six-year experiment with the Cleveland Browns will end, as the team announced its plan to release or trade their star wide receiver.

Gordon's recently injured hamstring also is an issue, as ESPN's Jordan Zirm reported the receiver injured the hamstring during a promotional shoot Friday night.

Gordon played 78 percent of the team's offensive snaps in the opening-week tie against the Steelers, even drawing an unexpected start that coach Hue Jackson called a "mistake" due to miscommunication with his offensive coordinator.

It's interesting - Gordon missed the start of Browns camp as he continued to receive treatment for issues that kept him out of the National Football League entirely in 2015 and 2016, but he returned before preseason ended and was expected to be one of their top receivers. "We wish Josh well".

The news came several hours after Gordon was listed as out for Sunday's Week 2 game at New Orleans due to a hamstring injury. He reunited with the club August 18.

The Browns announced in mid August that Gordon finally had reported.

Gordon has been suspended multiple times for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Josh Gordon's latest comeback attempt has ended.

"This afternoon we informed Josh Gordon and his representatives that we are going to release him on Monday", Browns general manager John Dorsey said.

Selected in the second round of the 2012 Supplemental Draft, Gordon exploded onto the scene during his second year, recording 87 catches for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns during the 2013 season.
