Steve Yzerman stepping down as Lightning GM

Elliotte Friedman: It's sounding like Steve Yzerman will be stepping down as the GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning with Julian BriseBois taking over as their general manager.

Yzerman will reportedly stay with the team as a senior advisor, while assistant general manager Julien Brisebois will be promoted to GM.

BriseBois, 41, has been in charge of Tampa's AHL roster since joining the team in 2010 and has watched numerous players come through the ranks to form the backbone of the current National Hockey League team.

- The Steve Yzerman era is coming to an end for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The club reached the Eastern Conference Finals four times, including this past spring.

He said he came to the decision in late July not to sign another contract as GM and that it took until now to iron out details on what to do next. For eight years, he commuted between there and Tampa, and while he was able to still do his job effectively, Yzerman said that when he and owner Jeff Vinik started to discuss extending his contract, continuing to be apart from his wife and three daughters weighed on him. "We have a plan here".

April 20, 2011: Yzerman is named finalist for GM of the Year Award after Lightning finish with 103 points (46-25-11), second in Southeast Division. He's helped mold the team into an annual Stanley Cup contender through smart drafting, development and shrewd trades. "I'm very excited about what lies ahead for our organization and truly enjoy working with a fantastic group of people in Tampa Bay". "The mission is going to be the same". The Bolts lost the 2015 Stanley Cup Final to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. He also traded for J.T. Miller and Ryan McDonagh at last year's trade deadline and got Nikita Kucherov signed to an extension this summer.

Yzerman played his entire career with the Red Wings, retiring in 2006 after 22 seasons. He began his front office career as vice-president of hockey operations under GM Ken Holland in Detroit and was part of a Cup victor in 2008 before getting the head job with the Lightning. "Again, entirely speculation. And Ken Holland has a two-year extension with the Red Wings".
