John Legend reaches EGOT status after winning Emmy for 'Jesus Christ Superstar'

The Creative Emmy Awards were held this week, and Legend managed to snag the award for 'Outstanding Variety Special (Live)' for his production role on Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert.

Whoopi Goldberg was the first black woman to achieve EGOT status in 2002, after she won a Daytime Emmy (hey, it counts!) for outstanding class special for "Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel", according to Billboard. Legend has won 10 Grammys and in 2015 he scored an Oscar for his song "Glory" from the movie "Selma".

The music superstar celebrated his EGOT win on Instagram, sharing a photo of the three new winners Sunday night. They previously won an Oscar for "La La Land", and a Tony and a Grammy for "Dear Evan Hansen".

He added: "I'm happy I was part of such a great show".

Incidentally, John is up for yet another award during that ceremony, having served as the lead in "Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert", as well as one of its co-producers. So amazed to be in such rarefied air.

Wife Chrissy Teigen posted a video of Legend using the bench from his piano to place the Emmy on the top shelf of his trophy wall.

They became just the 13th, 14th and 15th people to win all four awards all-time. And as of Sunday night, he's now an EGOT victor.

Two other songwriters were also one Emmy away from the EGOT on Sunday - Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, whose song "In the Market for a Miracle" appeared in "A Christmas Story Live!" The Creative Arts Emmy Awards honor excellence in Television technical categories such as makeup, casting direction, costume design, editing and cinematography. The Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie will be awarded at the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on September 17.
