Trump's top aides scramble to deny authorship of anonymous op-ed

Later Friday, The New York Times released a statement condemning Trump's call for an investigation and said the newspaper is "confident" the DOJ "would not participate in such a blatant abuse of government power".

"And this person chose instead, according to the New York Times, chose not only to stay, [but] to undermine what President Trump and this administration are trying to do".

On Wednesday, The New York Times ran an op-ed written by a senior official in the Trump administration.

"So we will do what we can to steer the administration in the right direction until it's over".

In the piece, the author, whose identity the Times is withholding, wrote "I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations".

For his part, President Trump lashed out in numerous directions between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

The official said that early on in the administration, some officials quietly discussed invoking the 25th amendment of the US Constitution, which allows the removal of a president judged unable to perform his duties. He said they are looking into action against the Times itself.

Pence's deputy chief of staff and communications director Jarrod Agen tweeted Thursday: "The Vice President puts his name on his Op-Eds".

The president said in an interview with reporters aboard Air Force One that the opinion piece critical of his leadership is a "national security" issue.

A "very small number of people within the Times who know this person's identity", Dao reportedly said, adding that the company had spoken with the senior official directly.

However, the writer says no one wants to cause a constitutional crisis.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the author was "not putting country first, but putting himself and his ego ahead of the will of the American people". The Opinion Section piece detailed a chaotic White House that appears to largely corroborate the findings of Bob Woodward's new book, Fear.

Trump is angry about the piece, and one by one today cabinet officials stated on the record, either personally or through spokespeople, that they were not the writer of the op-ed.

"This could be very unsafe if the person who is talking to the media is actually revealing national security secrets", he added.
