Donald Trump denies knowing in advance of 2016 meeting with Russian lawyer

The airport run-in comes on the heels of CNN's report Thursday night that President Donald Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, has reportedly claimed that Trump Jr. told the president in advance about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russian officials who promised dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Trump on Friday vehemently repeated his denial that he knew about the meeting, which is at the centre of Mr. Mueller's probe, tweeting "NO", he "did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr".

On "Fox News Sunday", host Chris Wallace confronted Giuliani, who serves as one of President Donald Trump's attorneys, on his flip-flopping about Cohen, Trump's longtime lawyer and fixer.

Giuliani was even more explicit in his praise of Cohen in May, saying that Cohen is "an honest, honorable lawyer" when ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked if he was concerned that Cohen, who is under criminal investigation by the USA attorney's office in Manhattan, would cooperate with prosecutors.

Giuliani briefly described his view of some of those conversations, claiming that Cohen's statements on them "take it right out of the campaign contribution arsenal" and could protect the president from being scrutinized for campaign finance law violations.

"That's the three-minute one involving the McDougal payment, AMI-McDougal payment", Giuliani said, referring to Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who claimed she had an affair with the president.

CNN cited anonymous sources saying Cohen was willing to share his information with Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation. These disclosures have ratcheted up tensions between Cohen and his former boss, who called...

The Trump Tower meeting was arranged by British music promoter, Rob Goldstone, who told Trump Jr that he had "information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".

After CNN aired the audio, Giuliani called Cohen a "pathological liar" and said he doesn't "see how he has any credibility".

Trump. Jr. responded, "if it's what you say, I love it", and started to arrange the meeting.

Jay Goldberg, another former Trump lawyer, argued Friday on CNN's "Erin Burnett Out Front" that Giuliani "immeasurably" damaged his case against Cohen with the sudden shift in tone.

"The president is willing to talk about anything, but it'd be wrong to subject him to that", Giuliani said, adding that the Russian meeting "hasn't come up in our conversations" with Mueller and his team. Cohen is under investigation by the US attorney for the Southern District of NY over his business dealings.

Trump himself jumped on the anti-Cohen bandwagon Sunday, as he retweeted a former Cohen defense of Donald Trump, Jr., regarding the Russian Federation meeting.

Cohen did not return a request for comment on Trump's tweet or the CNN report.

Legal experts told Business Insider last week that they found it freaky that Cohen felt the need to record a conversation with Trump, and some said they had never heard of an attorney secretly recording a client.
